Blues Guitar DVDs

Legends of Bottleneck Blues Guitar DVD This video presents rare and historical recordings from 1965 to 1970 of some of the greatest exponents of bottleneck blues technique. Black bottleneck guitar styles were probably initially inspired by lap-style Hawaiian slide guitar which enjoyed immense popularity shortly after its inception in the mid-1890s. By 1903, it was already in vogue in Mississippi (and probably elsewhere) according to testimony from W. C. Handy, Gus Cannon, and others. Although particularly popular in Mississippi and Louisiana, bottleneck styles could be found the length and breadth of the rural South. While there were similarities among guitarists in some locales, there was no preponderant style or approach other than the abilities and imagination of the guitarist employing a slide technique. The musicians presented in this video are among the greatest exponents of slide blues guitar who ever lived and are ample testimony to the superb variety available in this style. Features Son House, Johnny Shines, Fred McDowell, Jesse Fuller, Furry Lewis, and Mance Lipscomb. 13002DVD   $24.95

Legends of Country Blues Guitar Volume One DVD As a genre, blues music was developed at the beginning of the twentieth century by rural black musicians. The music they played was alien to formula, possessing such skill and robustness as to be captivating, but few were widely known. The blues revival of the early 1960's brought many of the survivors to the forefront of traditional music. The technique of a Rev. Davis, the power of a Son House, the charm of a Mississippi John Hurt suddenly leaps into sight, becoming more tangible, more awesome and more human. The rare footage presented in this DVD is a treasure beyond imagining, drawn from a myriad of sources, depicting some of the greatest blues musicians who ever lived: Big Bill Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt, Son House, Mance Lipscomb, Rev. Gary Davis, Robert Peter Williams, Josh White, and Brownie McGhee. 88 minutes. A free booklet of biographical material, rare photographs, and details on the tunes may be downloaded from guitarvideos.com to accompany this video. 13003DVD   $24.95

Mance Lipscomb In Concert DVD Mance Lipscomb (1895-1976), the son of a former slave, lived almost his whole life in Navasota, Texas, supporting himself and his family by tenant farming. But he was also a guitar player and songster who played blues and rags for his neighbors at local Saturday night parties. In 1960 Mance was "discovered." Within a short period of time he was recording albums and performing around the country. This video presents a rare 1969 television concert. 13011DVD   $24.95

Freddie King - The !!!! Beat 1966 DVD Freddie King, hard-driving and perhaps driven, was only 42 when he died on December 28, 1976. The intensity of the performances in this video suggest an artist who burned at full throttle every time he played. Guitarists as diverse as Eric Clapton, Michael Bloomfield, and Jerry Garcia have cited King as a formative influence. Most of the clips in this collection come from a unique time warp, a fleeting moment when Southern R&B collided with mid-60's "Mod" and rendered a show called THE!!!!BEAT. THE!!!!BEAT'S 26-show run in 1966 may have been ahead of its time. The time is one when television programming for black audiences was otherwise nonexistent and blues remained a powerful force in Southern black popular music. Freddie King was 31 at the time of THE!!!BEAT, playing and singing in prime form. This video/DVD collection presents all of Freddie King's appearances from this unique series. The presentation concludes with three tunes performed in Sweden in 1973 and shows Freddie's artistic growth. The booklet for the DVD is not included, but can be accessed and downloaded from guitarvideos.com. Running time: 60 minutes. 13014DVD   $24.95

Legends of Country Blues Guitar Volume Two DVD The blues "rediscovery" era of the 1960s brought to concert and sound stages many veteran artists who had participated in the "Golden Age" of country blues recording prior to World War II. The best of them retained much of their youthful power and brought with them the authority of experience. While these artists have since passed on, their record legacy is enhanced by these extraordinary performance clips. The first generation of recorded Delta bluesmen--Charley Patton, Tommy Johnson, and Mississippi Sheiks--is echoed in the stark and powerful performances of Bukka White, Sam Chatmon, Big Joe Williams, Houston Stackhouse and Son House. The East Coast ragtime style is exemplified by its supreme exponent, Reverend Gary Davis, seen here in some recently discovered informal footage. Huddie Ledbetter was a tradition unto himself with his repertoire of work and "play party" songs reflecting pre-blues African-American music idioms. The extraordinary color footage of LeadBelly singing three songs, and the informal footage of him singing Goodnight Irene to his wife Martha, are a treasure for fans of this American folk giant. Collectively the performers presented here are an extraordinary group, keepers of bygone traditions whose legacies still resonate. A 16-page comprehensive booklet featuring biographical material, photographs and details on the tunes performed on this DVD may be accessed and downloaded at guitarvideos.com. 13016DVD   $24.95

Lightnin' Hopkins Rare Performances 1960-1979 DVD Texas has given the world generations of extraordinary blues singer-guitarists, of whom none made a deeper impression than Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins (1912-1982). The stunning impact of his charismatic performances comes fully to lie in this DVD tracing Lightnin's career subsequent to his rediscovery in 1959. In 1960 German filmmaker Dietrich Wawzyn captured Lightnin' on his Houston home turf, and the clips here of him performing on the street and in a Houston bar are rare glimpses into his milieu (and the earliest known footage of Hopkins). Seven years later, a relaxed Lightnin' delivered engaging folk-blues performances for Seattle folklorists, five of which appear here. In 1970 he painted a masterful and entertaining musical self-portrait in eight songs from the Los Angeles PBS show Boboquivari. Finally, Lightnin's "lion in winter" appearance on Austin City Limits in 1979 shows a still-powerful country bluesman disproving the old dog/new tricks adage with a Stratocaster and wah-wah pedal! A 28-page booklet featuring biographical material, rare photographs, and details on the tunes can be downloaded from guitarvideos.com. 13022DVD   $24.95

Freddie King in Concert - Dallas, Texas January 20, 1973 DVD On January 20, 1973, Freddie King and a tight quartet performed at a TV studio in Dallas, Texas. "It was humming in there," recalls director Jim Rowley. "Absolutely cooking." King was 38 and enjoying what he called "the Fillmore circuit" in America as well as the adulation of throngs (including adoring rock stars) in Europe, especially England. This was the second time King had the brass ring firmly in hand, the first being during the early 1960s "dance party" era and his success with Hide Away. It all ended too soon with King's 1976 death but he left us a vibrant musical legacy which includes concert performances like this, a stunning example of a blues master coming to triumphant terms with 1970s African-American grooves and "playing funky." 13028DVD   $24.95

John Lee Hooker Rare Performances 1960-1984 DVD John Lee Hooker is one of the foremost blues performers of the postwar period. He is in actuality a Mississippi country bluesman and his music has always been firmly grounded in the traditional blues of his native state. He has remained true to its fundamental principles throughout a professional career of more than five decades. Whether playing solo in 1960 or with the Muddy Waters Band in the same year or his touring bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s, John Lee Hookers genius in writing and performing magnificent emotionally potent blues can be seen in all its glory in this video collection of rare performances. This DVD has been compiled from very rare footage and we have tried to remaster this to produce the best possible results. However, the listener should approach this DVD in it's historical perspective realizing that there are imperfection in the original source material. Legends of Country Blues Guitar Volume Three DVD Much of the extremely rare performance footage presented in this video has never before been publicly seen and documents the diversity of a music which was a personal as a fingerprint yet as universal as the blues itself. John Jackson, Pink Anderson, Rev. Gary Davis and the charismatic Josh White manifest different aspects of the rich Piedmont ragtime/blues tradition. In Memphis, echoes of the Mississippi Delta could be heard in the music of Furry Lewis, while the delightfully eccentric Jesse Fuller and the introspective Robert Pete Williams embody country blues which defies regional identity. Legends of the Delta Blues DVD The Mississippi Delta is the source of America's deep and pervasive blues tradition. At a time when that tradition appeared in danger of disappearing, many of its most elemental practitioners reappeared to remind us of the bruising force of this music's headwaters. They were living legends that demonstrated strong bonds with legends passed. This video presents the unalloyed power of Delta legends Eddie 'Son' House, Johnny Shines, Bukka White, and John Lee Hooker as they performed in the 1960s and 1970s. This is music which has mesmerized everyone from a young Muddy Waters to today's blues-based rockers. Its earthy vitality remains fresh in rare performances rife with slide guitars, driving rhythms and songs as searing as a hellhound's bay across the Delta darkness. 13038DVD   $24.95

Texas Blues Guitar DVD The Lone State boasts many cultural riches, and its gifts to the blues tradition are among its most exemplary treasures. The range of Texas blues guitar styles, both rural and urban, is captured in this collection of fourteen per-formances by four legendary Texas bluesmen. Blazing 1991 performances by the great Albert Collins generate a heat which belies his Iceman moniker. Freddie King cooks at full boil in a 1972 set which includes his signature song Going Down. Rare 1960 footage of Lightnin' Hopkins shows how intense the downhome acoustic Texas blues could be. A 1968 performance by Mance Lipscomb traces the blues tradition to its work song taproot with Captain, Captain. Alternately stark and celebratory, the Texas blues of these per- formances comprise a legacy as expansive as the Lone Star State's legendary vistas. Running time 60 minutes. 13041DVD   $24.95

Devil Got My Woman DVD Imagine you've stumbled into a juke joint where the mentor of Robert Johnson, Son House, and the idol of the Rolling Stones, Howlin' Wolf, "dis" one another. Picture a place where Wolf taunts Bukka White while the robust Parchman Farm alumnus spins his proto-funk dance grooves and the spectral Skip James weaves his haunting Devil Got My Woman. It's an archetypal blues "crossroads" where legends of the 1920s Delta and 1950s Chicago share the same musical space, suspended out of time in a super-real present, a non-specific "bluestime." This is no fantasy. You enter this very juke joint in this video of extraordinarily powerful footage Alan Lomax captured during the 1966 Newport Folk Festival. Devil Got My Woman is not, however, concert footage from Newport. Alan Lomax recreated a juke joint at Newport, stocked the bar, and let nature take its course. The resultant film footage captures the blues experience in its first and truest milieu, one in which African-American men and women drink, dance, and share their troubles and triumphs. Brooding faces absorbing the wailing pleas of Son House and rubber-legged dancers strutting to Bukka's buoyant blues are as much a part of the mise-en-scene as the legendary principals of the cast. Muddy Waters in Concert 1971 DVD “Rolling his eyes toward heaven and shaking his head like a man possessed, Muddy Waters cast a powerful spell. His high cheekbones and Oriental eyes gave him a certain Eastern, inscrutable quality, and at times his face even became angelic. He could easily work audiences into a frenzy, marrying the unmistakable sexual urgency of his lyrics to the vocal slide statements that for 40 years were as much a part of his signature as his voice, which many claim was the best in electric blues. A native Mississippi Delta bluesman, Muddy instinctively understood the unpretentious beauty and power in simplicity. Time and again, he transformed basic patterns into blues masterpieces. Decades after their introduction, hypnotic stop time songs such as “Manish Boy” still electrify audiences. Like the superstitions and voodoo images prominent in Waters’ best-known lyrics, the primal earthiness of his rhythms contains a deep, almost subconscious appeal.” Jas Obrecht, Guitar Player Magazine. The rare footage presented in this video presents Muddy Waters at his prime and with one of his best bands. The concert was filmed during a West Coast tour in 1971. Titles include: Long Distance Call, Hoochie Coochie Man, Manish Boy, Walkin’ Thru The Park, Crawlin' Kingsnake, She’s Nineteen Years Old, Got My Mojo Working and Hold It 13085DVD   $24.95

Josh White DVD Josh White was a key figure in the evolution of the folk and blues music revivals, a brilliant guitarist and dashingly sexy cabaret star who for three decades was the world's most popular acoustic blues performer. After a childhood leading blind street singers through the South, Josh was a popular recording artist in the 1930s golden age of acoustic blues; then in the 1940s he became the first bluesman to capture a large mainstream audience. Though his smooth, polished style is quite unlike the harder-edged approach that many people now consider basic to blues, his unique, lyrical guitar work and soulful singing made him a formative influence on the international folk scene. This video begins with a rare filmed snippet from the 1940s, then includes a range of European performances from the 1960s, showing the breadth and variety of Josh's repertoire, from traditional blues and gospel to folk revival standards and cabaret material. It captures the intimate, sophisticated style, swing and power that made Josh the most influential guitarist on the early folk scene and one of America's defining entertainers. 13090DVD   $24.95

Chicago Blues DVD Harley Cokliss's Chicago Blues filmed in 1972 was a remarkable film; remarkable in that it was not just a competent documentary but a film crafted with care by professionals with a love and understanding of music and a respect for its history and artists. The music and its artists of Chicago Blues reflect faithfully the structure of the city's Blues activity of the late '60s from unknown amateur to world famous stars, from house to small bar, from traditional down home to modern city style. Thus Johnny Lewis, a housepainter who played for his own amusement at home and was almost a discovery of the film team, to Muddy Waters, Chicago Blues' most famous figure. Lewis' Hobo Blues opens the film over images of the Bus Station and fixes firmly the importance of migration in the development of Chicago's postwar Blues. But with the great bulk of migrants coming from the Delta this pure East Coast offering sits oddly with the heavy electric Mississippi sound to follow. Strictly, only Muddy and Johnny Young came from Mississippi and while they contributed to and still played in the classic Chicago style, by the '60s the influence of Mississippi and the Delta was fading fast. The young lions of the West Side were in the ascendant and it's the nervous, raw energy of Buddy Guy's guitar and searing vocal that catches the positive mood of that decade. (The political mood was also captured on this film by interviews with Rev Ridick. Alderman A.A. Rayner and in a particularly telling contribution from Dick Gregory). 13095DVD   $24.95

Guitar Artistry of Paul Geremia DVD Paul Geremia is possibly the greatest living performer of the East Coast and Texas fingerpicking and slide styles. He has been called a national treasure. John Hammond says that he'd drive a thousand miles to see Paul play. When Paul plays Leadbelly, you can close your eyes and swear that it is Leadbelly himself. These are just a few of the comments that critics and musicians have said about him. Maybe one of the reasons is that for the past 40 years, Paul has not only played the blues, but he's lived them as well; traveling across the country in an old beat-up car and crashing on friend_s couches. A hard life, but simple: two guitars, four harmonicas, and a suitcase. But the details don_t really matter. It's all about the music; keeping the dying ghosts of the old masters alive with love, a couple of finger picks, and an old beat-up guitar. Paul has created a style which is very much his own combining his interpretations of the music of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Scrapper Blackwell and Blind Blake. 13109DVD   $24.95

Rev. Gary Davis: The Video Collection on DVD The first two tracks are taken from a short film that played in theatres in the early 1960s. This was shot while Rev. Davis lived in the Bronx. The filmmaker was very interested in the ambience but we do get a chance to see Rev. Davis play. Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest had one show that featured Rev. Davis along with Donovan and Shawn Phillips. The next two tunes are from this program. In 1969 Rev. Davis traveled to Seattle, Washington to play for the Folkore Society. Tracks 5-12 were filmed by the Anthropology Department of the University of Washington at the home of John Ullman.. This is rough footage but shows Rev. Davis relaxed amongst friends and his trusty cigar! During that stay John was able to take Rev. Davis in to a proper television studio and tracks 15-23 are from this session. These are seminal performances. The independent filmmaker Lionel Rogosin brought Rev. Davis together with other musicians for his film Black Roots. Tracks 24-26 are from this film. This collection ends with some very rough footage from the wedding celebration of John Gibbon (one of Rev. Davis’s earliest New York students). This was originally recorded on reel to reel tape and over the years the tape disintegrated. So what we have left is a faint video image with good sound that shows Rev. Davis enjoying himself at a party with friends. 13111DVD   $24.95

Guitar Artistry of Geoff Muldaur DVD Geoff Muldaur is one of the great voices and musical forces to emerge from the folk, blues and folk-rock scenes centered in Cambridge, MA and Woodstock, NY. During the 1960's and 1970's, Geoff made a series of highly influential recordings as a founding member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and the Paul Butterfield's Better Days group, as well as collaborations with then-wife Maria and other notables (Bonnie Raitt, Eric Von Schmidt, Jerry Garcia, etc.). In addition to tours and recording, Geoff continues to apply his arranging skills to a variety of projects for albums and film. Although he is known as a musicians musician, it is clearly his voice that most identifies him. The New York Times noted: Geoff Muldaur "...succeeds not because he copies the timbre and inflections of a down-home African American but because his voice - reedy, quavering, otherworldly - is so unusual that the music he sings becomes little more than a context, a jumping-off point." Richard Thompson's praise for him: 'There are only three white blues singers and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them.'" In this Guitar Artistry DVD, Geoff talks about his influences as well as his approaches to arranging music to the guitar. Titles include: The Wild Ox Moan, My Tears Came Rollin' Down, Just A Little While To Stay Here, Light Rain, Fishin' Blues, Wild About My Lovin', Downtown Blues, Gee Baby (Ain't I Good To You), Chicken, Drop Down Mama, Mr. Jelly Roll Baker, I Can't See Your Face Anymore, Trouble Soon Be Over and Got to Find Blind Lemon - Part One. 13118DVD   $24.95

Guitar Artistry of Ari Eisinger DVD Contrary to the rumors, blues and ragtime guitarist Ari Eisinger has only 10 fingers. It just sounds as if he has more. His mission is to preserve the classic blues and ragtime tunes from the 1920s and 1930s. - The Plain Dealer He's a fingerpicking guitar player par excellence who specializes in country blues and ragtime from the 1920s and 1930s... His playing is astoundingly complex and precise, obviously reverential yet filled with personal touches... A brilliant musician... he sounds like four people playing at once. - The Philadelphia Inquirer Ari Eisinger is one of the most dazzling country blues and ragtime guitarists playing today. Listen to his astonishing performances of the music of Blind Blake and you will hear things no guitar player has managed to pull off since Blake himself disappeared in the early 1930s. The sportin' right hand, the piano rhythms, the notes everybody else leaves out - they're all there. "One of the finest fingerpickers I've heard anywhere," "One of the top guitarists in the country," "One of the finest interpreters of traditional blues and ragtime" - these are just a few of the reactions from critics and fellow musicians to Ari's remarkable way with the blues of the 1920s and '30s. Able to shift effortlessly from complex East Coast ragtime to the propulsive rhythm of the guitar evangelists to down-home Texas country blues, Ari is one of the most authentic musicians you are ever likely to encounter. His interpretations of the songs of masters like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Memphis Minnie and Reverend Gary Davis have been called "downright spooky" for the way the styles of these pioneering guitar heroes are brought vibrantly back to life. Whether he is taking on the crystal tone and virtuosity of Lonnie Johnson or the liquid bends of Josh White played on a low-tuned Stella guitar, Ari deftly recalls the great music of the past while bring-ing his own brilliant musical personality to bear on some of the neglected classics of the blues. Based in Philadelphia, Ari has toured across the US and performed in the UK and Japan, shar-ing the bill along the way with artists like Doc Watson, John Jackson, Dave Van Ronk, Paul Geremia and Taj Mahal. Guitar Artistry of Woody Mann DVD Mann has absorbed so many guitar styles that he can change moods on a dime, weaving lyrical single string lines and chord harmonies that can take his tunes across the musical divides between genres. - Acoustic Guitar Magazine. Among guitarists and critics, Woody Mann is considered a modern master. While the blues are his touchstone, he seems to draw inspiration from every direction, blending a myriad of influences with ease and grace. Pioneering guitar legend John Fahey said it well: "You can hear classical, jazz and blues approaches somehow converging into a single sparkling sound – a sound completely his own. Woody takes a fresh approach to his blues re-creations and his own compositions defy category. If there was a category simply called 'great music' Woody's music would belong there." In "Songs From the Blues", Woody showcases his songs that are inspired by his love for the country blues and early jazz styles but brings the past up to the present with his original guitar style and contemporary songwriting. Mann's wizardry on the fretboard is matched by his ability to convey deep feelings with his songs - creating moods that incite, delight, or simply soothe. Mann blurs the lines between jazz, blues, classical, and world music, creating his own sound in the process. Attempts to categorize his music simply miss the point. This is brilliant playing that demands to be heard. - Sing Out Magazine. Woody took his first musical schooling as a teenager in the living room of Reverend Gary Davis, the legendary blues, gospel and ragtime guitarist. He soon went on to perform and record with blues masters Son House and Bukka White, British great Jo Anne Kelly and fingerstyle innovator John Fahey while studying classical music at the Juilliard School and jazz improvisation with the legend-ary pianist Lennie Tristano. Since those early years, he has toured throughout the world, recorded extensively, performed with blues and jazz legends, conducted workshops in a dozen countries, and schooled countless guitarists through his many books and DVDs. He has become one of the world’s renowned guitar masters with his own contemporary improvisational style. Every now and then, you hear a guitarist whose sound is completely his own and whose music flirts with several styles, never resting for very long with just one. Woody Mann is an artist who seems to have internalized many different genres and combined them in a way that is more than the sum of its parts. What is remarkable is how he can draw from several styles and techniques within a single song and have them blend without the feeling of inconsistency. - Musician Magazine Titles include: We’ll Be Alright, Little Brother, Cheap Cherry Wine, Snooks, Harlequin, Have Mercy, Delia, Early Hesitation Blues, Try Me One More Time, On Her Way Home, Great Dreams, God Works in Mysterious Ways and A Little Love And Kiss 13120DVD   $24.95

The Guitar of Blind Lemon Jefferson DVD Considering that he was the most popular male blues recording artist of the 1920s, we know surprisingly little about Blind Lemon Jefferson. He recorded over 100 sides for the Paramount label from 1926 to 1929 and died in mysterious circumstances in Chicago in December of 1929. He inspired a generation of bluesmen but had few imitators due to the complexity of his guitar playing and the distinctiveness of his high clear voice. Tom Shaw, a bluesman and friend of Lemon from the 1920s said this about his playing: "Lemon was strictly a bluesman... And he was the kinda bluesman you didn’t have every day on the street. He was the king. Wherever he pull his guitar out, he was the king there. Wasn’t no use for anybody else to come up talkin’ about playin’ against him, ‘cause they couldn’t even do what he was doin’ – all they could do was look and wonder how in the hell he done it." In this lesson Ari Eisinger explains the secrets to Lemon’s playing technique and style. He teaches five of Blind Lemon’s most popular and intriguing arrangements phrase by phrase and note by note. The Guitar of Mississippi John Hurt, Volume One DVD Mississippi John Hurt's appeal was universal, he was very much a musician of his time and place, playing within a tradition, but mapping out his own territory with subtleties of touch, phrasing and use of the guitar that were all his own. Though famed for fingerpicking in the alternating bass style, John would often employ omitted beats or syncopated runs, rather than sticking to an unvaried alternation. Also, unlike many musicians of his region, he was comfortable playing in a variety of keys, routinely working in E, A, D, G, and C in standard tuning, as well as Open D and Open G tunings. This video presents instruction in John Hurt's repertoire, with songs chosen to showcase his playing in different keys. The video lesson includes, at its conclusion, rare documentary silent film footage of Mississippi John Hurt playing guitar at his home in Washington, D.C. Memphis Blues Guitar DVD Memphis has long been a landing place for musicians from the surrounding rural areas in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi, and in the 1920s and 1930s, it was a wide open town with plenty of opportunities for musicians to perform their music and make a living. As a result of Memphis’ hub status, it developed a strong blues scene in the 1920s and 1930s, with a host of outstanding singers and players. Many of these musicians had successful careers as recording artists, but a surprisingly large number of similarly gifted musicians went unrecorded or only got the opportunity to record a few titles. This DVD lesson offers instruction in the music of many of the finest guitarists to record out of Memphis in the 1920s and 1930s. Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of performances from the spectacular and hugely influential Memphis Minnie, transplanted Mississippians Furry Lewis, Robert Wilkins and Frank Stokes and more obscure names from the past like Tom Dickson and Allen Shaw. The songs that are taught on the DVD have been selected for their musical merit, but also to build your skills as a Country Blues guitarist, with numbers in D, G, E and C in standard tuning, as well as Open G tuning. The technique building that will come from learning these tunes will give you tools to go in whatever direction you wish to take your music. A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. This includes all the lyrics to the songs as well as transcriptions of the guitar playing. The original old recordings of all the tunes is also included. Now Available: GW820DVD   $29.95

In this DVD lesson you'll have an opportunity to learn from the music of the greatest of the early Country Blues singer/guitarists, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Texas sharecropper and songster Mance Lipscomb, the almost forgotten Otis Harris, ace lyricist Funny Papa Smith, the spectacular and under recorded Willie Reed, and the Post-War master Lil’ Son Jackson. This is powerful and challenging guitar music, and the technique building that will result from learning to play these songs will take your blues playing to a new level. A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. This includes all the lyrics to the songs as well as transcriptions of the guitar playing. The original old recordings of all the tunes is also included. Now Available: GW821DVD   $29.95

Jackson Blues Guitars DVD Jackson, Mississippi attracted a host of blues musicians in the period 1910--1940. Many players from small towns made their way to Jackson, which as the capital of Mississippi and a much larger city, held forth the promise of more and better work opportunities, and the possibility of making a living playing music rather than driving a mule or chopping cotton. The Jackson Blues scene was an unusually rich one, stylistically, spanning the gap from the sophisticated Pop blues of Bo Carter to the low-down blues of Rube Lacy and a host of players working between those two extremes. Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of recorded performances from Tommy Johnson, one of the fountainheads of the Mississippi blues, Itta Bena natives Rube Lacy and Ishmon Bracey, with their distinctive vocal head tones and intense playing, the great Geeshie Wiley, a woman who played and sang as strongly as any man, Walter Vinson, guitarist and lead singer for the Mississippi Sheiks, and Bo Carter, a player with a rich chordal vocabulary and Jazzy sound. The songs presented offer a wide range of left and right hand approaches and ways of keeping time and will expand your your ability to play blues, moving far afield from the simple alternating bass. A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD, and contains all of the songs’ lyrics as well as transcriptions of the guitar parts. Also included are the original source recordings from which the transcriptions taught in the lesson were taken. GW826DVD   $29.95

Atlanta Blues Guitars DVD Included on this DVD are transcriptions and teaching of recorded performances from the youthful Buddy Moss, a player who influenced generations of East Coast players that followed him, George Carter, a mysterious 12-string guitarist who recorded only four titles, Curley Weaver, a player’s player, widely acknowledged to be among the finest accompanists in the blues, Julius Daniels, who came down from North Carolina to Atlanta to record early on and Peg Leg Howell, a bootlegger-turned musician who busked in the streets of Atlanta both as a soloist and in a trio with the fiddler Eddie Anthony and guitarist Henry Williams. The songs presented in the lesson will expand both your right hand techniques and your knowledge of the neck, with one song employing the almost never encountered Open B flat tuning. A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD, and contains all of the songs’ lyrics as well as transcriptions of the guitar parts. Deep Texas Blues 2-DVD Set In this second DVD lesson devoted to the guitar playing of Lightnin’ Hopkins, Ernie Hawkins dives into Lightnin's early catalogue from the Aladdin and Gold Star record labels. There was an amazing variety to Lightnin's early work. Listening to his early recordings we hear an artist at his prime. He effortlessly employing widely different rhythms, keys and tunings. The deeper we listen to these songs, the deeper our insight into what a master of Texas blues Lightnin' Hopkins really was. Lightnin's style itself came along at the perfect time: the advent of the electric guitar. His style, strong rhythms punctuated by his flowing but compact lead lines created a stinging and heart-tearing evocative sound. Lightnin's guitar style and technique worked great for both the acoustic or electrical guitars. The blues of Freddy King, Albert Collins, the Vaughn brothers, Billy Gibbons, testify to the power of this style. Lightnin' connects the generations of players, starting with Blind Lemon Jefferson, for whom he was lead-boy in the early 1920s. Standing tall at the center of the Texas Blues story is Lightnin’ Hopkins. In this double DVD set, Ernie Hawkins covers songs in unusual keys such as: drop D(Sugar Mama), in drop D but played in the key of A (Santa Fe Blues), in G (Bad Luck and Trouble), as well as in the usual blues in A, Come Back Baby and the country gospel Needed Time in the key of E. As a bonus, Ernie teaches his version of Lightnin's Hideway, the Freddy King tune coming back home to Lightnin'. Ernie teaches phrase by phrase and then uses the split-screen so you can carefully study what each hand is doing. Detailed tab/music booklets are included as PDF files on both DVDs. 186 minutes • Level 2/3 • Detailed tab/music PDF files on the DVDs GW828SDVD   $39.95

Country Blues Guitar in Open Tunings DVD Open tunings have always been an integral part of the Country Blues Guitar tradition. In this approach the guitar is tuned to a full chord. Most blues players began playing the guitar in an open tuning as it made playing much easier yet gave the guitar a much stronger and richer sound. For a minimum of effort you can produce a maximum of sound, rhythm and music. The most popular Country Blues tunings were the Open G tuning, also called Spanish tuning and the Open D tuning, also called Vestapol tuning. Also used by a few Delta guitarists such as Skip James and Bukka White was the Crossnote tuning where your guitar is tuned to an Open Em chord. In this lesson we will explore all three tunings with seven exciting fingerstyle blues arrangements. Also discussed are Delta blues ideas in Open G tuning as well as applying bottleneck techniques in an open tuning setting. Each tune is taught phrase by phrase and the played slowly on a split-screen. A detailed tab/music booklet is included. Tunes include: Open D Tuning: Vestapol, John Henry, If You Don't Want Me • Open G Tuning: Working On The New Railroad, Special Rider Blues • Crossnote Tuning: Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues and I'm So Glad. The Guitar of Joseph Spence DVD Joseph Spence was a virtuoso guitarist and master arranger in a style that was uniquely personal and yet caught the imagination of musicians around the world. He has been compared to the great blues masters, the African acoustic pioneers, and Thelonious Monk, and inspired such varied disciples as Ry Cooder (who has recorded four of his arrangements), Taj Mahal, John Renbourn, and David Lindley. Born on the island of Andros in the Bahamas in 1910, Spence worked as a stone mason, playing mostly the religious songs he and his neighbors sang in church. His guitar arrangements capture the sound of these Bahaman gospel groups, with rhythms reflecting deep African roots and the roll of boats on the sea, and multi-part voicings in which bass and lead improvise independent, complementary lines. As well as being a joy to play, Spences arrangements have valuable lessons for any curious guitarist. They are master classes in how to fingerpick in waltz time and capture the rolling Caribbean rhythms of Trinidad, Cuba or New Orleans. His separation of bass and treble, and the parallel voicings of his melody lines, teach interesting ways of harmonizing fingerstyle improvisations. And his unorthodox technique and brilliant improvisations break down old habits, and make one approach the guitar from a unique and fresh perspective. Tunes taught include: Oh How I Love Jesus, Happy Meeting In Glory, Brownskin Girl, The Glory of Love, The Lord is My Shepherd, Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer. Bonus Audio Tracks: 55 minutes of unreleased songs and interviews. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Now Available: GW970DVD   $29.95

Novelty Instrumentals of Rev. Gary Davis DVD In this lesson Ernie Hawkins teaches three Rev. Davis arrangements that will challenge your fingers. Rev. Gary Davis's tour de force in concert was his "Soldiers March." This is a multi-part instrumental played in the Key of F and C and is a showcase in demonstrating the genius of Rev. Davis's playing and arranging skills. Few country blues guitarists played in the Key of F but Rev. Davis explored this key with religious as well as old pop standards. "Darktown Strutters Ball" is a fascinating arrangement that captures the atmosphere of the 1920s. Rev. Davis use to tell his students that playing with a bottleneck was cheating. Yet his "Whistlin' Blues" uses this technique combined with an Open D6 tuning to create an unusual boogie piano sound. Ernie Hawkins teaches each tune phrase by phrase and carefully shows you the right hand picking as well as the left hand fingerings that were unique to Rev. Davis's approach. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Also featured are split screen segments where each section is played slowly and you can study the movements of each hand. As a bonus we have included various audio performances of Rev. Davis playing each song. Now Available: GW984DVD   $29.95
