Introduction to Celtic Fingerstyle Guitar DVD This DVD is for guitarists who want to get familiar with the world of Celtic music on fingerstyle guitar. National Fingerstyle Guitar Champion, Pat Kirtley, presents challenging arrangements in the DADGAD tuning of six traditional tunes from Ireland and Scotland. These arrangements are designed for guitarists who are already at advanced-beginner to intermediate level and want to explore a completely different musical style. The skill level progresses throughout the lesson from the very easy but melodic Skye Boat Song to a challenging dance tune Boys from Blue Hill. Pat also shows you: the structure and form of Celtic tunes; how to understand and play dance rhythms-jigs and reels; how to identify the different types of tune in this genre; How to play Celtic ornaments adapted from fiddle and wind instrument techniques; how to embellish the melody on slow tunes; how DADGAD tuning enhances Celtic arrangements. Celtic Melodies For Flatpicking Guitar DVD The colorful tones of the guitar are well suited to the music of Ireland and Scotland. Jody Stecher has developed a unique approach to flatpicking Celtic music drawing on the sounds and techniques of the harp, fiddle and pipes. This lesson presents a graded course starting with simpler fingering with special attention to picking techniques. Building on a base of a confident and deliberate right hand, more challenging left hand work I gradually introduced. The typical ornaments of Celtic music are shown to be manageable and effective on the guitar – including rolls, which have been thought by some to be too difficult to achieve on the instrument. Jody presents memorable tunes in the keys of G, D and A which are played in either dropped-D or standard tuning. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Music of Turlough O'Carolan (Arranged for Fingerstyle Guitar) DVD The compositions of Turlough O'Carolan, born 1670, have a special place in the story of Irish music, as does the figure of Carolan himself, a blind itinerant harper living at a time of significant change in Irish history. Carolan seems to embody the image of the old bards in whom resided the last vestiges of the ancient music, and the lost art of extempore poetry. His music is often seen as a link between traditional Irish melodies and baroque music, but more importantly it includes some of the most striking melodies ever composed. Originally written for the harp, these compositions lend themselves perfectly to the fingerstyle guitarist. In this DVD lesson, Duck Baker teaches a wide variety of Carolan pieces, from the folk-like air Blind Mary to the stately Hewlett. The mysterious Planxty Kelly and the deeply melodic The Fairy Queen are presented, as well as Carolan's Concerto, a complex folk-baroque arrangement of the bard's most celebrated composition. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF on the DVD. Now Available: GW926DVD   $29.95

British Fingerstyle Guitar (Martin Carthy) DVD Martin Carthy has forged his own personal and unusual approach to fingerstyle guitar. Musician Magazine recently cited him as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists Of The 20th Century. He has developed his own tunings and right hand techniques to enable him to play British traditional folk music. This body of music is rooted in a vocal tradition of hundreds of years as well as a strong dance culture. It is not bound by any time or bar structure. The guitarist must find ways to explore, reinforce, accent and embellish these melodies. Martin has successfully done this with the C G C D G A tunings. He plays with a heavy percussive attack reminiscent of a country bluesman and the gritty rhythm of a diatonic accordion player. He has a unique sense of phrasing and a strong emotional and atmospheric feel for his music. In this lesson, Martin explains in detail his playing techniques and style for seven of his most popular arrangements. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD.
