Hapi Drums

HAPI Drum The HAPI Drum is a steel tongue drum ideal for jamming and playing percussive beats. The unique tone is created by a tuned vibrating tongue of steel. The concept is similar to a wooden tongue drum. When a tongue is quickly and lightly struck with the finger or mallet it vibrates creating sound waves. The arrangement of our notes makes it easy to explore new musical horizons. You don't need a musical background to enjoy a HAPI Drum. Anyone who wants an easy to play intuitive instrument can play one. Specify color and key when ordering.

Dimensions: 12" (30.48 cm) wide by 8" (20.32 cm) high. Weighs 12 lbs (5.44 kg)

Steel Selection

Researched was done on many different steels to find one with the perfect balance of tone and harmonics. Along with great sound one of the benefits of using steel is its environmentally friendly nature. It is one of the most heavily recycled materials in the world.

Precision Crafted
Pressed into molds that creates unique shapes. These are not propane tanks. Note layouts were painstakingly created. They produce the best sound and supporting harmonics for each note. Each tongue is sculpted into shape using a computer controlled cutter. Additional dampening to the notes and drum body has been added to keep the drum from becoming discordant and "ringy". Breakthrough proprietary technique built into each drum provides excellent resonance while supplying the correct amount of dampening. Carefully chosen an opening port in the bottom of the drum that serves three functions. The bottom hole allows the sound to escape and increases the volume. It releases the tone from the body so that the notes do not overlap each other too much. This is especially desirable for faster playing. It allows the player to open or close the port with their lap and chose different resonance levels for a different effect.

Tuning
Each note on the drum is skillfully hand tuned using a strobe tuner. The unique tone of the drum is created by a tuned vibrating tongue of steel. The concept is similar to a wooden tongue drum. When a tongue is quickly and lightly struck with the finger or mallet it vibrates creating sound waves. By changing the shape and length of the tongue optimal vibration and perfect tone is achieved. By arranging the notes in our unique way each note when struck excites surrounding notes that are musically compatible with it. This adds to the harmonic spectrum of the tone. Rather than just one tone create a spectrum of supporting sound for each note. The tone is similar to singing bowls or musical bells which create multiple harmonic overtones. The body of the drum acts as a resonating chamber adding depth to the note.

Finishing
Powder coating is applied to the outside and inside of the drum for a super durable and attractive finish. Powder coating has a stone like texture for a great feel. It is a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. It emits zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs) unlike common spray and liquid paint. Powder coating over spray can also be recycled so it is possible to achieve 100 percent use. While powder coating is more expensive we feel the benefits outweigh the additional cost. Then added to the custom designed isolated rubber feet to the bottom of the drum. These feet make it possible to set your drum on any surface and still get a great tone. The low profile of the rubber feet make it comfortable to play the drum in your lap too. Every step of creating the HAPI drum is done with care and excellence to produce the best steel tongue drum on the market today.

Mini HAPI Drum The smallest and most compact drum. These little ones have a big sound at a small price!

It's so easy to bring along your Mini HAPI Drum anywhere you go. Play it in the park, bring it over to a friends house, or take it camping. Fits in day packs for easy travel and even has its own optional padded bag for transport and storage.

This drum uses the same eight note layout as the larger Hapi Drum models which adds harmonic tones to each note when played. A bottom port helps let the sound out to fill the room and rubber feet allow it to be set on any surface for play.

Attractive hammered copper powder coat finish inside and out. It is a durable protective layer for your drum that adds a cool "stone" finished texture.

Available in three different pentatonic scales: D Major, D Pygmy or C Major.

D Major produces a happy carefree sound and is suitable for playing with all sorts of instruments. D Major is considered "the key of glory" and is very uplifting. This is the highest scale we offer and pairs nicely with the D Major Origin drum. The Mini is one octave higher than the Origin.

D Pygmy is a smooth and relaxing scale. This African scale originates from Rwanda. In this arrangement all the notes are whole notes and it works great with other instruments in C Major. Pairs wonderfully with the Mini in C Major. They share some notes and play off each other in interesting ways. They can be played together, similar to a Bongo Set.

C Major ranges from C4 (middle C) to E5. C Major is a very popular musical scale. It has no flats or sharps. It is also known as a "natural" scale. This drum sounds great with the HAPI Slim A Minor, G Major, or F Major scales. It also pairs up with our HAPI Origin Drum in the scales of E Minor and D Minor. And, of course, it sounds wonderful with our HAPI UFO drum which is in the full C Major scale. The HAPI Mini C Major is the exact same scale as the HAPI Slim C Major. The Slim has stronger bass response but the Mini has a much smaller shape and strong mids to high.

Each Drum comes with a pair of mallets that are specifically handmade for this drum. It also includes a handbook that outlines playing techniques. The handbook has mallet and hand playing techniques, as well as practice exercises. Travel bag not included.

HAPI Drum UFO A larger, more versatile Hapi Drum. A drum that offers even more musical possibilities.

It all started with designing a new mold that would provide more surface area for notes while barely increasing the weight. Once the mold was finished experimentation was done for a year with different note layouts and scale arrangements. The note layout is a fine tuned arrangement so the best harmonics, ease of play, and resonance are all realized together.

Colors available: Hammered Copper

The HAPI UFO drum has 11 notes and is in the C Major Scale: D3, E3, F3, G3, A3, B3, C4, D4, E4, F4, G4.

There are nine Pentatonic Scales in this single drum. They are C Major, D Minor, D Pygmy, E Minor, F Major, G Major, A Minor, A Akebono, A Pygmy. It also has one Hexatonic Scale, A Integral.

The center note of C4 ties all the other notes together. The top shell of the drum is tuned to a higher harmonic support of C5. This helps unite the notes into a chorus of beautiful sound. C Major is one of the most commonly used key signatures in music. The white keys on the piano correspond to C Major, its relative minor is A Minor. C Major is often thought of as the most straight forward key owing to its lack of flats and sharps.

Made from specially selected musical steel using a custom molded shape.
It is 15" wide by 8" tall and weighs only 12.75 pounds.
It is easy to play with infinite musical possibilities.
With the isolating rubber feet located on the bottom of the drum you can set it on any surface to play.
Each UFO comes with a pair of mallets that are specifically handmade for the drum. It also includes a handbook that has mallet, hand playing techniques, and practice exercises. You can enjoy playing the UFO with your hands or the included mallets.
