Remo Kanjira, Key-Tuned, 7 Inch, Antique The traditional Indian kanjira was made using skin of the now-endangered Monitor Lizard. Remo's synthetic Skyndeep lizard-graphic drumhead is an ecological tribute to the beauty of the Monitor Lizard. For its tunable kanjira, Remo attaches its Skyndeep lizard-graphic drumhead to an Acousticon shell with a 30-degree radial bearing edge; the frame is finished with a dark stain veneer, giving the drum an elegant and traditional antique look. With its modern technologies, Remo uses proprietary materials that enable kanjira players to bend and modulate pitch exactly like the original, without being affected by changes in climate. Remo's Kanjira can be tuned easily by inserting a 5/64" hex key into a recessed key hole and rotating the key in small increments to achieve the desired low pitch. The 2 3/8" depth x 7" diameter Kanjira fits comfortably in the player's hands and features a one-inch flat jingle set to produce a dry tone with short decay. ET-8227-00   $163.30

RohanRhythm Low Pitch Sheesham Mridangam The Mridangam is one of the most ancient and popular hand drums from India. It is the principal percussion instrument in South Indian classical Carnatic music. The mridangam has two drumheads: bass (thoppi) and pitched (valanthalai). Overall length is approximately 22-24 inches; the bass head is 7 1/2 - 8 3/4 inches in diameter and the pitched head is 6 1/4 - 7 1/2 inches in diameter. The shell is made of sheesham. It functions as a solo instrument, as well as the primary percussion instrument in vocal and instrumental ensembles.Sliver-thin reeds are inserted between the two layers of the pitched head to create a distinct, buzzed sound. When played, the drum is held horizontally, and played with the fingers and palms.

The new RohanRhythm tuneable mridangam combines traditional strapping with a convenient nut-and-bolt system of fastening. The design has many advantages over the traditional design:

Easy tuning with a wrench
Pitch range of up to five whole steps (C to A) compared to +/- 1 whole step with the traditional instrument
Easy head replacement
Independent tuning of the drumheads
Weaved rope retains traditional elegance of the through-and-through strapping
No sharp hooks to impede performance
Traditional mridangams can be retrofitted with the new design

For more information on the design, visit Rohan Krishnamurthy's website. MRDRLS   $630.00

The Jori, sometimes called the Panjabi Pakhawaj, is said to have been created by Sata & Balwand, two musicians in the court of the Fifth Sikh Guru. According to tradition, they cut a pakhawaj in two creating a pair of drums; Jori translates as pair. The base drum, called dhamma, is tall with nearly parallel sides, and has a smooth head. The player applies a thin layer of chapati dough to the dhamma’s head. This thin layer must be removed and re-applied before each session. Only the smaller drum in the Jori, the pura, has the black syahi. The sound generated from the Jori carries well, it is louder and deeper compared to the common tabla set.

banjira Khamak, Light, Blemished BLEMISHED Khamak, Light. The khamak, or bugchu, is almost 7 inches tall and has a diameter of 6.5 inches. It is used for rhythmic accompaniment. This instrument has one head that is resonated by plucking the string that is attached to it.

Dating some 500 years back, the khamak originally had a single string but was later modified and now contains two strings. The player holds the body of the instrument under his left arm while his left hand pulls the small brass drum, jerking it slightly, almost unnoticeably. This controls the tension on the strings and sets the fundamental tone of the melody when the strings are plucked....the performer plucks them briskly with the plectrum held in his right hand. However, the fundamental tone produced does not remain fixed and completely depends on the tension applied to the strings.

Scratch & Dent Savings!!! Product codes ending in "-2" are Blemished. They are New and Unused with Superficial blemishes that may include, blisters in the finish, scratches, dents, stains, discoloration, rust or pitting on metals, imperfect glazes, non-structural repairs such as putty in nail holes, or other surface marks. The irregularity does not affect the playability or sound quality of the instrument. These are a good value. BLM086   $75.90
