The Ney, an end-blown cane flute of the Near East, produces an entrancing, haunting, melodic sound. Used from Egypt to Persia, Ney history dates back thousands of years. More recently, its mesmirizing sound has been influential in modern contemporary recordings, as well as cinema (hear soundtracks such as "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "The Passion of the Christ"). Because these authentic instruments are handcrafted, pitch will vary slightly. To determine the accurate Western key, play the instrument with the lowest hole open. For example, if the sounding pitch in a fully closed postion is D, the instruments true pitch is E (sounding note with the lowest finger hole open).
